Yellow Topaz is the modern November birthstone and Blue Topaz is an accepted Modern December birthstone as well as the Sagittarius Zodiac stone. Topaz is the accepted gem for the fourth, 19th and 23rd wedding anniversaries.
Topaz is a common gemstone that has been used for centuries in jewelry. Its golden brown to yellow color is classic but is confused with the less valuable citrine, which is sometimes wrongly sold under the name Topaz. The Blue Topaz that is often confused with Aquamarine is rarely natural and is produced by irradiating and then heating clear crystals. Topaz is the November Birthstone and the Sagittarius Zodiac stone.
Topaz is found in a variety of colors including: brown, red, orange, pink, sherry, yellow as well as colorless. Imperial Topaz is used to denote a stone that is reddish orange. Green and blue topaz are naturally very pale, they are often irradiated to produce more intense colors.
Sky Blue Topaz, Swiss Blue Topaz, London Blue Topaz are names used in the gem trades to refer to the depth of color. Sky Blue is the lightest while London Blue is the darkest blue.
Topaz crystals can reach the incredible size of several hundred pounds. Topaz can make very attractive mineral specimens due to their high luster, nice colors and well formed and multifaceted crystals. The principal sources for topaz are Brazil, Sri Lanka, Russia, Australia, Africa, Mexico and Pakistan.
Folklore, Legend and Healing Properties
Topaz is one of the twelve breastplate stones of the High Priest referred to in the Book of Exodus. The breastplate stones are considered sacred to twelve mighty angels who guard the gates to Paradise.
