Ancient People of New Mexico from Approximately 200-550 AD thru 1350 AD

A branch of the Mogollon culture, the Mimbres Indians farmed, made exquisite pottery and kept diaries on convenient cliff walls, Fallen walls of stone, strewn with pottery fragments, clearly indicated a people of high culture.  The pottery they produced, decorated with finely painted geometric and naturalistic designs, is world famous and highly sought after by the European market after the first excavations in the 1920's.  The earliest ruin found is a "pithouse".  The dwelling had a narrow 2'x10' entrance on the east side and the floor was below ground level.  The Mimbres Indians left the valley suddenly and mysteriously by the mid 1300's AD.  One wonders about the figures on the overehanging cliff walls and tries to understand their meaning.
Upon settling in New Mexico, Dan became infatuated with the ancient cultures that once thrived in the area he called home (at the time of this image taken in his Studio in Silver City at the base of the Gila Mountain Range and Cliff Dwellings).  With years of art restoration experience, he soon sought to develop a new "canvas" that would realistically bring to life the intrinsic beauty of the Mimbres and Pueblo art.  He created an imitation stone as his canvas and relying  on his restoration talent began replicating the tones and hues of these ancient paintings.  The material used for the "canvas" is so lightweight  that he has been able to create very large "slabs" - much lighter that conventionally framed artwork, while remaining practical adornments for the home.
